Norway Landscape Gallery
Imagery of our competition entry, Astrup Landskapsgalleri, a new gallery and visitors’ centre nestled within the landscape near Astruptunet on the west coast of Norway. The gallery is conceived with a rammed-earth plinth - emerging from the ground, it’s earth-like appearance forms part of the landscape and is capped by a light-weight timber canopy. The timber canopy is proposed as a highly crafted piece of joinery - detailed like a giant piece of furniture, and celebrating it celebrates timber craftsmanship and nods to the original construction of Astruptunet.

The design is composed of three pitched-roof elements, each accommodating different functions of the programme. Set into the landscape, the forms twist to follow the terrain and relates to the scattered buildings along the fjord, helping to soften their visual impact.
Their seemingly ad-hoc placement recalls the ‘Klyngetun’, a traditional Norwegian clustered farmstead where several buildings are grouped closely together. This heritage form, common on the west coast and painted by Astruptunet himself, provides an important cultural reference for the proposal.
